A Location That’s Friendly To Man’s Best Friend

For many of us today, there’s an energetic family member who must be considered during the home buying process, even though they are mostly silent on the subject. We’re talking, of course, about man’s—and woman’s—best friend on four legs.
Whether those four legs are short and stumpy or long and rangy, your dog will need exercise. In Vancouver, that can be a challenge with less green space and more restrictions on dog walking. If you take a look at a map, you’ll see that South East Vancouver is really one of the few corners of the city with lots of green. In other words, River District is in the middle of dog-walking heaven.
From Knight Street to Boundary, from East 41st Avenue south to the bank of the Fraser, you’ll find more than a dozen parks. More than half of them are dog friendly. Here are our top five highlights for pooch-approved parkland.
1. Everett Crowley Park, entrance off Kerr Street. Extensive green space, off-leash available all day on the inner trails. Lots and lots of trees and trails for longer walks.
2. Sparwood Park, links E 49th and Champlain Crescent. A smaller, mostly open grass park with off-leash areas 5am-10am, 5pm-10pm.
3. Fraserview Golf Course Park. Dog walking is allowed round the northern perimeter of this public golf course, following the line of Vivian Drive and Rosemount Drive. During the day, dogs can be off-leash in the designated areas 5am-10am, 5pm-10pm. Car park entrance off Vivian Drive.
4. Riverfront Park. Wonderful views along the river. Dogs must be kept on a leash. A temporary pathway has been opened along the riverfront from Kerr Street east to Boundary Road, connecting Riverfront Park to the Fraser Foreshore Park in Burnaby.
5. Killarney Park, small, good for a short walk. Off-leash areas available 5am-10am, then 5pm-10pm.
When you visit River District yourself, you are bound to see lots of dogs enjoying the freedom of the parks and the foreshore—although to protect habitat some areas must be on-leash. For full details of parks and dog walking regulations, visit Vancouver Parks and Recreation listing.
